Why Embrace Aikido?
Aikido, often referred to as “The Way of Harmony,” is a Japanese martial art that transcends the traditional concept of combat. It embodies principles of balance, connection, and self-improvement, offering a transformative experience for mind, body, and spirit. Below, we explore why Aikido is an excellent choice for individuals of all ages and abilities.
The beginner’s mindset in Aikido Shoshinkan is a cornerstone of the journey, embodying humility, curiosity, and an openness to learning. Shoshinkan, meaning "The Hall of Illuminating the Way," encourages students to approach their training with a fresh perspective, free from preconceived notions or ego. In this mindset, every movement, technique, and principle is an opportunity to deepen understanding and cultivate harmony within oneself and with others. Beginners are reminded that Aikido is not about perfection but progress—each practice is a step towards embodying grace, balance, and resilience, both on and off the mat. By embracing the Shoshinkan spirit, students learn that true mastery begins with the courage to be a beginner, finding joy and growth in the process.
Below are some of the reasons you should join us:
1. Develop Inner Peace and Mental Clarity
In an increasingly fast-paced and demanding world, finding moments of tranquillity can seem impossible. Aikido integrates movement and mindfulness, teaching practitioners to remain centred and composed even in challenging situations. Through regular practice, you can cultivate a sense of inner peace, improved focus, and the ability to handle stress with grace.
2. A Non-Competitive Art for Personal Growth
Unlike many martial arts that emphasise competition, Aikido is non-competitive. Its philosophy is rooted in mutual respect and cooperation. This means practitioners progress at their own pace, focusing on self-improvement rather than comparison. Aikido teaches that true strength lies in adaptability and harmony, not brute force or aggression.
3. Physical Fitness and Coordination
Aikido’s flowing movements build strength, flexibility, and endurance without putting undue strain on the body. It is suitable for people of all fitness levels, and its emphasis on circular motions promotes agility and balance. As you refine your techniques, you’ll notice improved posture, coordination, and overall physical vitality.
4. Learn Conflict Resolution Skills
Aikido teaches you to neutralise conflict without causing harm. It focuses on redirecting an opponent's energy rather than meeting force with force. These principles are not only applicable on the mat but also in everyday life; whether in personal relationships or professional settings, Aikido equips you with the tools to handle disagreements constructively.
5. Build Confidence and Resilience
Mastering Aikido techniques requires patience and perseverance, but with time comes a profound sense of achievement. Each step forward boosts your self-confidence and fosters resilience, empowering you to face life’s challenges with strength and composure.
6. Connect with a Supportive Community
Aikido dojos are welcoming spaces where individuals come together to learn, grow, and support one another. The shared journey of self-discovery and skill development creates a strong sense of camaraderie. Whether you’re looking for friendships or simply a positive environment to train, Aikido offers a place to belong.
7. A Lifelong Practice
Aikido is a martial art for all stages of life. Its adaptable techniques and focus on personal development mean it can be practised well into old age. It’s an art that evolves with you, offering continuous opportunities for growth, both physically and mentally.

Fantastic family friendly dojo, caters for all abilities. We started at the dojo 9 months ago and have loved every minute. The team of instructors are dedicated, experienced and provide so much support, led by Sensei Tad. The people that train come from all backgrounds, ages and sexes, at every level of experience. Everyone supports each other and has a real family culture.
My 15 year old daughter now trains 3 hours a week and it is the pinnacle of her week. She has grown in confidence, fitness and self belief, in addition to being able to defend herself. And she has made a bunch of equally minded new friends.
I would really recommend Aikido and this dojo. -
I’ve been training at this dojo for about 5 years now and trained in Aikido for many more. Both the kids classes and the adult classes are superb. A very welcoming atmosphere and friendly environment to train. The instructors are all really great people and go out their way for all the students. The quality if the lessons are the best you will get and perfect for total beginners or even advanced students. If you are thinking about giving a martial art a go, this dojo is a fantastic choice.

I've had experience of this dojo both as an adult learner and as the parent of a nine-year-old who's now a keen 'aikidoka' - and all I can say is, it's great. Tad and his crew of younger teachers are enthusiastic and disciplined, and they excel at communicating these values to their students.
My son had experimented with other martial arts before and had never been wildly enthused. But now he's rolling pretty much everywhere he goes and is excited to show me all the techniques he's learned in each class. It's been a real pleasure to watch him grow and develop into the activity, and I know that with Tad, Rowan, and Leah he'll continue to do so. Highly recommended. -
Aikido Shoshinkan is absolutely fantastic! I have previously trained in other martial arts and I can honestly say that this is one of the most fascinating and insightful styles. Aikido Shoshinkan as a club is very friendly and welcoming and there is a real sense of community and integration between beginners, graded students and instructors alike. All the students are always ready and willing to help each other improve and to learn from one another and to test new ideas. Sensei Tad has a brilliant teaching style and is very knowledgeable, friendly, approachable and patient which is exactly what you need when starting out at a new club. The fact there are several training sessions a week is great, as this provides even more opportunities to learn and improve. There are also regular training seminars from various training instructors from around the world which are not only helpful but are also very inspiring! I think the five star rating says it all!!!
